Recognize cd drive

Recently had to replace my xp and now it doesn't recognize a cd in a drive when I try to burn something. What should I look for to correct this problem, a program, or something to check on the computer? Thanks, Warren

Start by making sure the drive is still good. Try to boot with a bootable CDROM,
such as the XP installation disk. If you can't boot then the drive is bad. If you
can then you have joined a huge list of frustrated XP users that have shared this
problem. You can do a Google search for the problem and you'll get lot's of hits
about a hi/lo filters key in the registry. I've never known anyone that found that
fix to actually work.
Does the CD drive show up in the device manager? Probably not. Does it show up in
during the initial POST? Probably yes.

Go to Device Manager and see if your CD drive has a yellow exclamation mark on it.

If so, then follow this link http://www.techbug.com/en/?p=4 .

Unlike Ricer, this has worked everytime for me.

Actually, I've never had the problem, but I've seen the problem posted surely at
least a hundred times here, and you are the first person that has ever stated here
that it actually worked.

The same fix is also claimed to fix floppy drives that have the same problem (almost
as common as the CDROM problem), that one I have had, and it did not fix it. However
in most of these cases (for either drive type) I don't think there is a yellow exclamation
mark next to the device, the device manager indicates all is well, but all is not
well. Normally when there is the mark, you can just delete the device and restart
XP, and all is automatically fixed.
