Data retreival

HI, I am trying to recover data from a corrupt hard drive. My computer can see it
in device manager but not in the my computer section. I have used variouse recovery
software but just getting read errors. Most software can not see the drive.
Should I format the drive and then see if I can do a recovery?
Cheers
Matt.

Formatting the drive is absolutely the wrong thing to do !
And the more you mess with the drive the lower the chance of possible file recovery.
It sounds, on the limited evidence you have given, as though you need a specialist
recovery service which will be very expensive - get a quote first then decide if
your data is worth it.
I would, however, continue your research on a hardware forum as this one is focussed
on XP. "Tom's Hardware" is one of many.

I was able to recover all the data from a corrupt hard drive using Linux Puppy.
It took some playing around with and some help from the Linux Puppy Forum, but I
was eventually successful.

Consider yourself fortunate, in the future, back up important data, before you put
it at risk.
