Both malware and failing HDDs can produce bizarre symptoms because they have messed
up how Windows works - there's no point in trying to rationalise the symptoms, all
you can do is to steadily eliminate the possible causes.
So far you have 3 possibilities:
- Malware
- Failing HDD
- Overheating PC
I am inclined to forget the overheating (prima facie the likeliset cause of sudden
shutdowns) in view of the evidence you have to date. Come back to that later.
Against the possibility of a failing HDD, I've already said you must backup all
the data as your first step.
Having backed up, you can then get back into the diagnosis:
The fact that Malwarebytes won't install and Defender has written errors to your
logs does suggest that malware may be active. I'd try and run Superantispyware again,
this time in Safe Mode, because:
- It does run in Safe Mode !
- If overheating is the issue, there will be less stuff running so you may be able
to get to the end of the scan
- if malware is interfering with Superantispyware and causing it to abort, the
malware might not be running in Safe Mode
Do a Quick Scan first - it takes less time (so might succeed before the PC shuts
down) and addresses all the sensitive areas. Run a Full Scan later if you can.
When we know the outcome we can think about the next steps.
