Well Vistas defrag is worse than WinXP's you can't see nothing happening with Vista.
On WinXP you only see coloured lines with hardly any movement.
Now hard drives are like libraries that store books/files. As books are taken out
on loan there are spaces on the shelves as new books come in and that are larger
than the spaces available they go on their own new shelf. The same goes for the files
on the drive. Software is installed and file are added. Software is uninstalled and
files are deleted so the drive becomes like a cullender with loads of holes.
To me a defragger should work like the original DOS and Win9x/ME systems. They should
remove all spaces by moving all files to the front of the drive.
Now defrag has been out for years I know it was used in DOS 6.0 it may have been
used in DOS 5.0. As it says its a DOS defragger with did the job properly. With Windows
3.1 there was no defragger as it could still be done under DOS. With Win9x/ME that
was a very good defragger because it moved all files up to the front of the drive
and I wish the WinNT systems would work the same.
What I would recommend is
Defraggler 1.17.172
Its a lot more visual what is happening and its free.
Even after running Defraggler you will see a load of spaces on the drive this must
be down to how a NTFS system works.
Now it will depend on how often you need to defrag by the files on your system, how
often they change in size. If you download loads of movies they all take up space.
After you have watched the movie you may save them to an external hard drive as a
backup then they will be deleted of the main drive. I download lots of large files
and I use them and save them to an external drive then delete so these spaces come
in various sizes. I normally defrag with defraggler every couple of weeks. Defragging
may depending on how bad the file system is speed up the operation of programs.
Give Defraggler a go you have nothing to loose. Its made by the same company Piriform
that makes CCleaner, Recuva and Speccy and those are all free. They also have their
own forum is you have any problems or questions about any of there products.
Piriform Forum I've been
on there for years.
