I always get a chuckle out of the term, "installed on top of itself" There is
really no such thing when it comes to code, as all of the engineers will tell you.
We/I never use that term because it really doesn't exist in our field. As I said,
a repair, which is what MS terms it, no matter how you are installing to replace
a damaged or old operating system, is a new install with old settings data and reg
entires being populated into the new install. If you think of it, when using an
MS install media, you always have to enter a "key code". This is because it is a
NEW install. You won't see the extra Windows directory unless the install fails
and Windows hasn't been able to complete and clean up after itself.
The only time you see an appended Windows folder is when a parallel install is
done on the same drive/partition (NOT a good idea on any Windows system, especially
Win 9x), or as I said, the installer couldn't complete and clean up after a repair
installation. In some cases, the repair is impossible due to damage in the original
install, the installer halts/exits and you end up with the same failed result. Anything
I have said here, you can confirm with an MS engineer. The links I had concerning
the subject are all dead from age! LOL
