I wouldn't use an online virus scanner, or at least use it as your only virus
scanner, Online virus scanners use java and java is really insecure, they in most
cases will also make you install newer java versions to work on Win95/98/ME.
I recomend the java and java script toolbar buttons plugin if you use firefox,
so you can shut off java and java script on the fly, I usaly keep java off untill
I'm on a safe page, then I'll turn it on and once done turn it off, java script is
a bit safer but not much. If your having problems with a page loading, turning off
java script too, will often help them load, its generaly some of the scripting "toys"
that make pages load slowly, this is really helpfull on old machines.
Inernet explorer in all versions is bloated, slow, and unsafe no matter what you
do.
The GRC site I mentioned earlyer in this thread, sends packets to your computer
and does port scans to test your firewall, its not a virus scanner.
