One thing most users who find winME to be a problem over win98 are upgrading rather than doing a fresh install.

WinME did not upgrade win95/98 well.

You can do a fresh install of WinME from a upgrade disk just format a a drive, fdisk it with the WinME disk and start the WinME install it will ask for your old Win95/98 disk put it in then put the WinME back in and away you go.

Unlike win98, WinMe will work perfectly fine with older 95 or 98 drivers or newer ME drivers, so no problems, WinME' will still make backup files, 5 of them infact, but one is dumped at startup if system resore is on, with it off you still can still restore older backups and its also much safer as there are several trojans that use system restore to install, with it off they won't install, corse with WinMe being old its getting safer everyday as people are not messing with it anymore.

WinME does not like shared interupts on mice, network cards or sound cards in general, so move cards around to make sure these and your hard drive controler are not sharing interupts.

Turning off interupts in the bios for usb and video will help keep interupt conflicts to a minimum, WinME will asing interupts from free ones to these devices, sutting off things like serial ports, etc. that you are not using will help open up interupts.

Also you can disable usb ports in windows its self that you are not using such as those on pins on the motherboard, most people don't even have cables for these things on these old systems, so why the bios don't have options to turn em off is beyond me.

As someone said WinME is avalible from many sites cheap and is good for old systems.

I use an old WinME slot one board with a 1ghz p3 socket 370 in a paddle board to watch videos and dvds on my TV and it works well overall, though I ocasionaly run into a baddly encoded video that I have to re-encode on my other machine for it to play smothly, I need more ram in the old box but people are bidding the ram I need way too high right now.
