It did not find any bad sectors, so I don't think it's my hard drive going.
After it ran scan disk, it re-added the driver for the video display after telling
me to reboot. However, I went to use the ATI program again, and it crashed again
(giving me blue screen error). But fortunately it did reboot normally still. I did
a repair with the ATI program, so hopefully it is fixed now.
The problem with the keyboard has nothing to do with the keyboard or computer
not working. Windows 98 did not recognize USB plug and play the same way later versions
of Windows did. Someone explained it to me last year on another message board, but
I'm sure you can find it online somewhere.
I don't know why you guys assume it's a bad hard drive. I have had many computers
over the 15 years or so, and most problems I've had, have been software-related (usually
Windows but not always). I've only had two hard drives die. One was 6 months after
I bought it, the other one after 8 years of heavy use. This particular pc has mostly
been used for this one TV tuner program for the past 8 years....and not much else.
If you take good care of it, and use surge protectors, why should it die in 10
years unless it has some factor defect? I mean, heck, it's a PC, not a laptop that
gets dropped or jostled all the time or something. True that I have moved twice
since I bought it, but otherwise it's barely been moved in that ten years. Don't
they generally make noises or something when they are dying?
Anyway, even if it was the hard drive, I'd just take it in and get a new hd installed...but
I'd rather not pay the money until/unless I have to!
