Among the posts in that
multi-page thread
someone started mentioning all the software packs you have to add
AFTER "installing" W98.
Here's my list:
Of course the device drivers that get "installed" off the M$ CD are ancient
--if the drivers for your gear are even there, so, driver downloads.
Unofficial comprehensive update pack (3rd-party; M$ doesn't offer this easy way)
KernelEx
3rd-party comprehensive USB driver
Anti-virus[1]
Anti-spyware[1]
Anti-hijack[1]
Firewall[2]
Zip utility
Multimedia codecs
Flash player
Java runtime environment
PDF reader
A proper browser and mail client, of course
A proper media player
A real office pack
A real graphics pack
...
In short, M$ OSes--especially the ancient ones--are just so tiresome
when compared to a modern (non-M$[3], of course) OS.
The fact that the alternative are FREE is just salt in the wound.
That WINE will run your
old apps (still FREE) compounds the indignity.
[1] No other vendor's OS requires this nonsense;
only M$ produces insecure-by-design OSes which require layers of band-aids.
[2] It's just shameful that M$ would put out an OS that included a browser
but DID NOT include a software firewall.
...and the "firewall" that M$ *finally* did put out is a PoS:
to this day it doesn't filter outbound packets
and it was never backwards-compatible with old OSes.
[3] ...and recent (notice that I didn't say "modern") M$ OSes
have Product Activation and Windows Genuine Advantage (aka remote kill switches).
...and still have the poorest security of **any** OS.
