A special thank you, Martin. CHKDSK /R worked like a charm. It took a while since I have a 500 GB hard disk. But it was worth the wait.

For those of you who not be familiar with the chkdsk syntax, in Windows 7, it’s: “chkdsk /r P:” (don’t use quotes, of course), where P: is the drive being checked. Enter that syntax in the Start menu, "search programs and files" box.
