Win7 should take 60-90 seconds to load, from power-on to the point where the hard
disc LED stops flickering.
The two key parameters are most likely to be the amount of memory and the number
of programs installed.
These days most programs want to load some part of themselves into memory as soon
as you boot up, and your Startup list can become very cluttered if you have a lot
of software installed. If you don't have enough memory to accommodate all of them,
what happens is that, as each one starts up and tries to muscle a space for itself
in memory, Windows has to shuttle another one off to the pagefile to make room for
it. This is incredibly time-consuming.
Go to Start > Run and type 'msconfig'. Open the Startup tab and uncheck everything
except the things you know you want to keep. You could uncheck EVERYTHING without
risk of harming your system: but there will be some things you will want to keep,
eg antivirus program, wallpaper changer. A Startup list should contain, at the very
most, 8-10 items. Reboot and time the difference.
Did you buy the computer from a discount chain store? These places sell computers
like sausages, often with inadequate memory, often through sales assistants who may
or may not know more about computers than you do.
