Interestingly it was originally an Asus motherboard where I came across this problem - not that this is strictly significant.

I wanted to make high quality transcription off vinyl and tape and the background interference, particularly in one channel, really annoyed me. I tried everything I could think of to no avail.

I decided to purchase a relatively high end audio card (Creative Audigy 2 ZS) and this solved all my problems. (I have continued using this card with my new motherboard rather than try out the on-board sound)
