SharePoint & ADAM w/o a domain?

I'm trying to connect a vanilla installation of WSS (Windows SharePoint Services
3.0) to a locally-installed instance of ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode),
but I keep getting an error "No trusted domains or forests found" then "Error when
trying to get trusted forests and domains. Exception message: Current security context
is not associated with an Active Directory domain or forest.".

Is it possible to connect the two without a domain security context? I already tried
setting "peoplepicker-searchadforest".

I want to add external SP users using an ADAM LDAP lookup, and maybe add authentication
as well, but they won't even connect. (I don't have Visual Studio).
